Sharecropping & Tenant Farming
Sharecropping was a system that was common during the Reconstruction
Era. Landless poor whites and freedmen worked the land of a landowner. The landowner supplied all of neccesary items to grow the crops in return for a share of the harvest. Tenant farming is almost the same as sharcropping. The difference was mainly that tenants usually owned agricultural equipment and farm animals. They also bought all the neccesary items for farming like sharecroppers. Tenants usually paid the landowners or agrred upon sharing the crops. Tenant farmers usually owned more than sharecroppers and made a small profit. The systems allowed the landowners to operate their farms without soending excessive amounts of money for the labor.
